Fashion statements, it's only hair and get bugged

New Addition to the Man Cave:
Dan received sports jerseys courtesy of Matt in Seal Beach, CA. They were Mike Bossy - Islanders, Nolan Ryan – Astros, Roger Staubach – Cowboys and Bo Jackson - Raiders. Cool stuff. Display location in the man cave still to be determined but I think the barstools will be getting new back covers today. I will say this, once Dan decides where he wants them to be, if they are moved, even just a little, Dan will notice due to his high level of attention to detail. By the way guys, your mothers and wives don’t come to work with you, clean up your evidence. I mean empties.

Once again, Dan decided to show his more progressive fashion side. Dan and some of the Danettes took a fashion risk and wore colorful pants. I thought the colors were more spring/summer wear than fall/winter. Paulie always The Topper added a striking pair of Wolverine boots, perfect for the snow covered Connecticut ground they had today. Who was not a risk taker? Fritzy, who chose a light khaki color and McLovin, who chose a light gray. McLovin did attempt to spice it up a little by wearing his red socks, but it just wasn’t in the same brotherhood. Personally, I liked the look Dan wore on the Jimmy Fallon show much better.
Fashionitas in training

Fritzy’s mock headlines:
He only went two for ten. There was one that Dan gave an ok, one got a chuckle, and I swore I heard a groan to one as well. Sven in CA, where are you? Maybe he shouldn’t have called in after all: one got crickets, one just an alright and a third a bit of a chuckle.

Possible COTW:
AJ McCarren, the Bama QB has, well, a hot mom. Would you want your mom or anyone else in your family to be one of Fritzy’s Cougars of the Week? I feel a creepy sensation coming on. Find out tomorrow how it all shakes out.

Seton has a problem with bugs
He swore he saw four bugs that no one else had seen. Whether mental or physical, the bugs made him jumpy and itchy. The perfect set up for a little Dan torment. Seton brought in the tiger costume today and thought that might be a source. Face paint is all set up for tomorrow morning. Cutting the hair to look like Whitey Herzog? Looks like that may happen tomorrow or next week and he’s not looking forward to it. What happened to "it’s just hair"?

Paws is looking for a new little buddy!

Is it wrong that Dan is more concerned with Seton and McLovin’s safety when they play ball in the studio more concerned than that of his own kids? Not really. Money makers versus money takers.

McLovin wants more of Dad/Dan’s attention:
What’s the best way to do that? Become the opposing viewpoint and keep hammering at that point even when you no longer make sense. McLovin rattled Dan enough that Dan hit a golf ball into the ocean on the golf simulator that just made Dan angrier. What was the topic that did all this? QB ratings.

Dan the lawbreaker: Dan’s truck was hanging over into the handicapped parking spot and was noticed by the people at NBC. Two-A-Days, also in colorful pants today and sporting a fresh hair cut, was sent out to move it as Dan was going back to air.
This could have happened to DP

Side notes:
Still accepting job titles for Two-A-Days for his Vista business cards! Casey, host of The Box Score, was sporting colorful pants today as well.

Monday 11/12 at 5:30 Directv Audience Network channels, 101, 239, 334 and 500 will be airing DIY Man Caves Nick and Artie. This is the same studio that Dan uses on Monday when he does FNIA the night before but with branding changes and memorabilia placement adjustments for Dan’s show. These are the same people that did the Milford Man Cave and the Mobile Man Cave for Dan. On occasion DIY Man Caves replays the Milford man cave and Mobile man cave episodes.

Two full days of fun, fun, fun

Back to my normal position today and ready to go!

What got Dan to where he needed to go after the storm?
His handsome Dodge Ram Truck. High water? No problem. Tree limbs in the street? "Dodged" them. Downed power lines? Drove right on by. Big winds? Never felt them in his solid, heavy duty Ram and never heard them in the insulated cab. Space to pack up your stuff and go? The cargo box of this baby gives you length, width and depth plus the box side wells give you tons of room. Wait in line for gas? No way! Dan always felt safe in getting from point A to point B in his Ram and his truck showed it. The 2013 Ram gets 25 mpg highway.

DP in his beautiful Ram 1500

From Wednesday: Fritzy had his beloved Halloween sports related names. Basically, this is the same list he’s had since 2002. He always says something along the line of, "I thought we could have some fun with this" to get them on the show. These are sports names that can loosely fit into the theme of Halloween. Because this is the same ol’ same ol’ Paulie didn’t even put it on the morning run down after Fritzy’s pitch. Not satisfied with Paulie’s decision, Fritzy proceeded to send it to Dan in an email. Dan still wasn’t going to go there and Fritzy knew it, so when Dan created an accidental opening, Fritzy was right there to jump in and start rattling them off managing to give the whole list. My new favorite line from Dan: "Did I stutter? Did your ears flap?"

McLovin’s Halloween outfit worn to the studio yesterday wasn’t much different than his everyday Ellen outfit that he wears other than he substituted a vest for the V neck sweater. Worked his Ellen dances moves again. Lovin it! Now had he added a short, straight, blonde wig, now we’re talking! Looks like McLovin didn’t shower this morning – baseball cap day.

Additional Halloween tid bit: There’s a long standing rivalry between Seton and his wife at home. Seton is a Yankee apologist and his wife is a Red Sox rocker. Seton took his son trick-or-treating not understanding the costume his wife put Kieran in. Seton thought it might be from Where the Wild Things are and introduced his son as a green monster. He was close. His son was "The Green Monster" the nickname for Fenway Park’s 37’ high left field wall. Smoked!

Dan often wonders why they don’t give the SI swimsuit models suits that fit. Is there a shortage of material? Seton questioned if it was due to the economy. Sure, yep, that’s it, the economy. That morphed into how would you feel if your wife were in the SI calendar? Everyone would be thrilled and thought it would be an honor, yet Dan held back knowing how guys like them had the thoughts they do about the models. The older Dan’s daughters have become, the more we hear him say things along that line. Good dad Dan. But hold the bus, Dan loves the John Belushi peeping Tom scene from Animal House. By the way, did you know that the SI swimsuit models love McLovin? Not for his good looks or intellect. Because they think of him as one of the girls. Won’t that suck the testosterone out of your system.

Poor girls the economy has robbed them of their material

Fritzy's current obession with Hayden Panettierre is really getting creepy. Dude, drop it already Creepy with a capital C. Here’s a previous Celebrity Beach Bowl snip it: JLo was once escorted by Fritzy during the CBB but didn’t get a chance to do his awkward 3 second "Hmmm" hug because her burley body guards were surrounding him.

Fritzy just can't get enough
In the boy that was close category:
Seton and Fritzy were playing with Seton’s current favorite toy, the zippy yellow football. Seton was in the wrong area of the studio doing Hall of Fame catches and the ball got away from him knocking over Paulie’s picture of his late father on a motorcycle holding Paulie when he was little and the Father’s Day mug that Paulie got from his two girls. Fortunately there was no harm to that foul. Seton’s guilt of what could have been went with him to his the box appearance.

Little Seton isn’t so little any more - How do you gain weight while you’re in the hospital –
Paulie offers up his sister to give Dan shrinkage
No, that last part just didn’t come out right. What do all of these things have in common? New DP gear is in just in time for the holidays and it’s photo shoot day before wing sauce hits the front of their shirts. Fritzy, after being in the hospital for almost two weeks, not only had food snuck into the hospital but also felt he had to make up for lost ground once he got out. What does this mean? Another shirt size up. Latest nickname for Seton, Mr. Tubby, since he no longer can wear medium swag without it snuggly fitting over the stomach. He also struggled mightily trying to get off a smedium pull over. It was like watching Houdini escape dangling upside down out of a straight jacket. He did strike his best male model pose for us today. Work it babe! Paulie’s sister loves how Dan looks in green. The polo shirts that came in were all in XL, too large for Dan. So what did Paulie do? Offered up his sister to do some shrinkage, laundry shrinkage that is. Side note: The Passion Bucket earned another dollar today during the swag look in thanks to…….. you guessed it, McLovin. Mic not on, you loose a buck. I wonder how much he has contributed since Dan instituted the Passion Bucket program.  DP merchandise is available at: www.danpatrickgear.com  The brand, brand new stuff isn't on the website yet.
Stay cozy and warm like Paulie with this stadium blanket

Did you know: Dan was featured prominantly in Brad Paisley’s video, I’m Gonna Miss Her (the fishin’ song), that won the CMA Video of the Year award.  Unfortunately, Brad didn’t prepare an acceptance speech because he didn’t think he would win and left Dan out of the laundry list of people he thanked. Side note: Brad’s wife, Kimberly Williams-Paisley is now eligible for Cougar of the Week and as Fritzy says, she’s hangin’ in there nicely.

Big meeting today at Buffalo Wild Wings after the show in preparation of the network addition of NBCSN was announced early in the show. Maybe they want to have Seton bring back his favorite lines – dude, sick dude and balls dude or Fritzy’s porno pictograph. Plenty of time for Fritzy’s neuroses to be at it’s fullest by the time they get to B-Dubs as he was talking about it already during his box appearance. Growing pains can be painful. Time to air it out and come to Jesus!

More reasons to watch:Dan got a shipment of That’s My Boy videos at the man cave for future audience give aways. How to win TBA.

A Box Score to Remember: During the Phone Booth segment Fritzy went to Fritzyland recalling a past dalliance he had. Now we know why he is so adamant about doing the Cougar of the Week segment. He was once a boy toy to his own Cougar, Simone, who it sounds like made Fritzy the sexual being he is today. Thanks a lot Simone. Paulie ran away, McLovin hid his eyes and Seton could not stop laughing as Fritzy shared his story. Keep it coming Fritzy!

Ridin' out a side effect of Sandy

Mike Florio from Profootballtalk.com and NBC sports all things professional football, coming from the snow covered mountain regions of West Virginia, informed us that there would be no DP today. Although the efforts were valiant, Paulie and crew were not able to resuscitate the old boy. Although we love Mike, it just wasn’t the same. What effect did that have on America? Here a just a few examples:
  • Housewives discovered how dirty their homes were, but decided to leave them another day in case there was no Dan two days in a row.
  • Deliveries were delayed due to lack of focus on finding addresses and following directions.
  • Parents rediscovered all the things about their children that they hope they’ll grow out of, soon.
  • Production slowed in the work place as Dan helped keep workers motivated and they discovered how bad their jobs really were.
  • Students were not able to study, as school was not as exciting as it once was and homework was truly tedious.
  • Restaurants over cooked food and undelivered in service.
  • Gas stations refused to sell gas for less than $4.00 a gallon.
  • Grocery stores only sold organic foods.
  • Burger joints became vegan bistros.
  • Bars only had non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Scores girls put their clothes on.
  • Most importantly, no other sports show could stand up to what Dan provides his audience five days a week.

Come back Dan and Danettes!
America needs you!

There was something bothering me after I posted yesterday. There was something missing. Me. The thoughts and inspiration that caused me to start this blog had somehow disappeared in the process of setting it up. The formality of going through the motions of creating the blog brought out my analytical side and put away the creative. I didn’t figure it out before I went to bed but when I got up this morning it hit me right away. It must have been swirling around in the back of my brain with other thoughts and got jostled to the forefront while my brain was tilted to the left while sleeping. With a fresh head, I begin again. So….. I’m sitting in front of the TV, diet soda to the side and ready to start again.

Why did I title the blog the way I did? Being an avid viewer of the show, one day the dynamics of the relationships hit me like a dodge ball. With that revelation I better understood another reason why I enjoyed the show as much as I did. Today I’ll write about the roles I see each person portraying in the show. I say adult family as all of these men are adults, married and with children of their own.

Fritzy, McLovin, Dan, Paulie and Seton
It’s not just your husband/boyfriend/brother/son’s sport show: In the time I’ve been watching the show I’ve learned things. Some sports, some not. Either way, you learn, without being taught thanks to Dan, the Danettes and what they are able to draw out of their guests and audience. This show welcomes women, and they do have some in their audience and as guests. They don’t club you over the head trying to draw you in like other shows do, "Hey! Look! We have a woman on staff!" It’s not all testosterone charged stats and game break downs being shouted at you like most sports themed shows, although Seton does do, and the audience participates in "Stat of the Day" with stats that make you say, "That’s ok, but just like Dan, I liked the song better." The Dan Patrick Show is presented to you with humility and humor. It asks riveting questions like: Why do baseball pants have stirrups? It appeals to the casual fan as well as satisfying the needs of the die hard. I offer you this: Dan and Seton’s reenactment of the deck scene from Titanic will have you awww and laugh simultaneously.

Dan Patrick: Directv titles him as "The Boss" when they do the audio open and scan the studio. Yes, he is the boss, but I see him more as a father figure to a group of mischievous sons. He is after all, old enough to be their father if he had them in his late teens/early twenties. This former ESPN (Mothership) Sports Center anchor has hit a home run with bases loaded leaving a network that he held dear for so many years. He still holds the concept of Sports Center in high regard, Example: Criticizing the anchors when they dress more casually than what the founding anchors did, but he has moved onward and upward beyond what he could ever have done if he stayed.

Dan at the end of a shift at the Mothership
Paul "Paulie" Pabst: Paulie is the producer of the show and does it very well. I see him as the older brother as he appears to be the most level headed of the support foursome called the Danettes. He tries to keep the show moving along on schedule, remind Dan of things Dan wanted to say, quietly feeds Dan ideas that occur to him during the course of the show and provides tid bits of straight forward opinions and ideas on air. He’s also wiley enough to find a way to keep his five good seconds of soccer going all year long. Paulie’s the kid that would rather say I’m sorry than ask permission and then he moves on to the next thing. His mid-western appeal and straightforward approach fool you into thinking, "No, he’d never do something like that…… again."

Paulie
Patrick "Seton" O’Connor: Seton is your tech guy that keeps things running smoothly in all areas of sound as well as other equipment that keeps the production of the radio, and sometimes TV show, at the level it is. Seton is the wayward son. He’s held a diverse array of jobs before finding his way to radio and didn’t finish college although he excelled in the social aspects. Seton likes his "cups" filled with his favorite beverage, beer, his music and late nights. He’s up for almost anything and is Dan’s favorite son – fields Dan’s basket balls during breaks, will tip a few after work and is able to carry on a music conversation that will hold Dan’s interest. Seton’s the kid that would rather say I’m sorry than ask permission and then brag about what he did at the same time. His youthful appeal and infectious laugh make you want to say, "Ok, I forgive you……. again."

Seton

Todd "Fritzy" Fritz: Todd is the booker for the show, the person responsible for scheduling all the guests that appear on the show either in studio or over the phone. Todd is neurotic most of the time worried about what people think and say about him, if the guest will remember to appear on time and prays that they call on a land line, not cell phone and if they do call on a cell phone that the connection is clear and they don’t move from that great spot until the interview is over. Todd is the pervy uncle whose jokes you probably wouldn’t repeat. Some because they’re funny but you think they might be too blue to tell your mother, and some because they just warrant silence and crickets because they’re just not funny. He’s the TMI guy that will tell you things his wife doesn’t want you to know and drifts into his own personal fantasy land at the drop of a puck. Should a woman’s name come up in the course of the show, guarantee he’s searching the internet for the hottest picture he can find of her and emailing it to Dan during the show. He asks permission, usually follows the rules, and if he breaks them feels terrible and asks forgiveness. His pouty appeal, bad luck both personal and creative professionally sometimes just makes you feel for this under dog and automatically forgive any transgressions.

Fritzy

Andrew "McLovin" Perloff: Andy is the show’s blogger. As Dan says, he showed up one day and just wouldn’t leave. Andy also writes for Sports Illustrated and claims to be the football insider but he really makes you wonder sometimes. Andy is the know it all that doesn’t know it all. The ivy leaguer from Dartmouth that likes to remind you of that whenever he can. Andy did get his own intro song first for a feature he does, Against the Grain, and also was the first Danette to get a sponsor for his bit from Red Hook. This feature leaves you, like Dan, saying "I know less now than before he did that piece". Andy is the clown of the family that does things that just makes you shake your head because it’s all to get Dan’s attention, good or bad. He’s the whiner who plays the victim. He creates a front row versus back row tussle daily and although he’s supposed to be so academic, he’s the kid that never has his homework done before class starts. His nerdy appeal and "I can’t believe he did that" reaction keep you wondering about him. Andy, like most of the boys, asks for forgiveness after the dead is done, over and over and over again.

McLovin
Side note on Red Hook: Over time their presence had grown from McLovin wearing a baseball cap, to lighting, promotional stickers/posters, to apparel. In the works is a Red Hook beer named and taste chosen by and for Dan and the Danettes. Anticipated launch – Super Bowl 2013.

In today’s edition of The Dan Patrick Show: The show comes to you from the New York City (NYC) man cave. The traditional theme music is played with different city scenes featuring Dan and the four member entourage named the Danettes. The members of the Danettes will be discussed as time/space occur during the course of the blog. The Monday show is broadcast from a studio it shares with the Nick and Artie Show making travel more convenient for Dan and the Danettes living in the New York area. The studio on Monday morning is brighter than the N&A show and thus viewer friendly in the exploration of what’s new or what’s been moved or changed since the DP show was there last. Today’s addition - pumpkins. What did you notice?

Danettes in the NYC Man Cave

In the tease we get a view of the pre-show run down. Today’s view: The subject of overtime etiquette is in progress because of the Jets/Patriots game. Also injected is the effect overtime has in cutting into Football Night In America (FNIA on NBC), which Dan hosts along with colleagues Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison (in studio with Dan), Bob Costas, Hines Ward (at field commentators), Al Michaels and Chris Collinsworth (game night play by play and analysis). How chaotic can it actually be sneaking peaks of the game in progress and waiting for your count down cue to air? I think I could handle it.
Dan, Tony and Rodney - FNIA
In the video open we are reminded of McLovin’s recent non-recognition from a parent at one of his daughter’s sandbox dates. McLovin at times comes off as the show’s diva who at times is tolerated by the rest of the show members until brought back down to earth by something as simple as reminding him that the guy at the sandbox didn’t really care he was on television. Would it bother you if you were on TV and not recognized? For me it would depend on if I was alone, with family, with someone I wanted to impress and what activity I was doing. No one really wants to be interrupted while they’re eating or going to the bathroom do they? This was something McLovin encountered at the Michigan/Michigan State game.

In the audio open we are given a compilation of Warren Sapp, NFL Network, telling Dan to touch his nose mixed with various sound effects, and bits and pieces from previous interviews worked into a hook that keeps you listening while the members of the broadcast are introduced: "The Boss" – Dan Patrick, Paul "Paulie" Pabst, Patrick "Seton" O’Connor, Todd "Fritzy" Fritz and Andrew "McLovin" Perloff.

Whoops!  On Friday, via Twitter, Paulie and The Box Score host, Casey Geraghty, both broke news that The Dan Patrick Show and the wrap up show, The Box Score were both going to be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network as an additional TV partner to the show. This big news was not ready for official press release and thus Paulie was given a gentle verbal reprimand that the news was only to be teased, not told a couple of times during the show. Dan learned of the tweets from a phone call from a higher up (NBC perhaps) and then needed to pull the reigns on the galloping horses running away from the barn. As Paulie says, the I Team is always on it. Would you have spilled the beans early? Oh so tempting to share great news.

The poll of the day, probably to be repeated on one of the Mothership’s (ESPN) television or radio shows asked: If you could only go to one event, front row seats, which would it be: Game 7 MLB Cardinals/Giants, the Monday night NFL game Lions/Bears, or the Presidential Debate. McLovin, usually the contrairian, chose debate while the others, although tempted by the NFL game chose game 7. What would be your choice? If it was game 7 with my team, game 7. The verbal back and forth that doesn’t make a difference on my vote, I’ll pass. By process of elimination, that puts me at the Lions/Bears game. Hopefully with enough things to keep me warm in an outside stadium at night in Chicago in October.

Other non-sports highlights:
  • While playing shuffleboard during a look in before resuming the show simulcast, Dan comments to Seton that he appears hung over even though he hadn’t been drinking and that Seton’s son seemed "soft" like his father where his wife was tough like a bad ass. Seton agreed he was soft but his son was a bad ass like his wife. I would be the bad ass in my family, you?
  • In another look in Dan comments on the toughness of Paulie’s oldest daughter in the questions she asks. At home, one of Dan’s daughters school project is to test 100 cats to tell the difference between left and right pawed cats, which Seton feels she’s a genius. The poll question origination/credit is also discussed, as McLovin loves to take credit for the good ones and blames others for the lame ones. This is a recurring item on the show
  • Seton plans to pay off his ALCS bet next week in time for the debut on the additional TV partner. He’ll be cutting his hair like Whitey Herzog, once he figures out who that is, wear tiger face paint with tiger costume and sing eye of the tiger karaoke style as his Yankees did not win game 4 as predicted.
  • Fritzy’s in "The Box" consisted of a little background information on the Frank Williams Monday Night Football theme he does each week and the condition of the cowboy outfit he wears on Monday. Made me wonder when it was washed last and how it smelled. Eeewww! The MNF bit is a combination of in studio and New York City shots featuring Fritzy, done by Casey. Coming out of the box we discovered that Dan’s bag handle broke while Fritzy was carrying in his bag and that he planned to blame it on McLovin anyway.
Fritzy in his MNF outfit

  • Dan spoke briefly of growing up listening to radio broadcasters as a kid and how they become your friend with the magic of their voice and how they became someone you trusted and believed in. This is something that stays with Dan when he speaks in genuine appreciation of his viewers/listeners. Something I’m sure he became more aware of after leaving the Mothership. Praise was also shown to Fritzy for his ability to do mock headlines on short notice when a listener/viewer, Sven, called in again to share mock headlines that he had created. It should be noted that Fritzy, like Paulie and Seton left the Mothership to join Dan when he left to create his own radio show.
  • We learned DP Show regular, Tony Dungy spoke with both presidential candidates asking them to keep the effects of family in mind when making legislative decisions.
Tony Dungy visits the NYC Man Cave

  • We were reminded of hospital etiquette: Don’t say how great what you did is away from the hospital was to a patient, such as going to the movie Argo, and don’t bring food up to the room that the patient can’t eat. Fritzy recently had another lengthy visit in the hospital. When he has health issues it really makes you feel for the guy. Viewers sent cards, email, Facebook messages and tweets when he’s been away due to illnesses (digestive issues a couple of times and kidney stones).  Sadly, I did that when a family member was hospitalized.  Ooops!  You?
  • We were also treated to a ping pong match between Dan and Seton where Dan was dominating until his back was up against the wall and he nailed McLovin with a ball outside the line of play.
Here’s an additional show nugget: The Directv promos for the show are worth the watch. Shot with humor and surprisingly well acted by Dan and the Danettes make commercial breaks more enjoyable. Today’s promo: The Angry Chair. So true.
